Burn The Fat Feed The Muscle
explains the methods that natural bodybuilders and
professional fitness models use to reach lean single
digit fat percentages while displaying very muscular
physiques.
The Trainer
Tom Venuto is a natural (no drugs
or steroids) bodybuilder, author and personal trainer
with 19 years of experience. If you've ever wondered
what 3.7 % body fat looks like, you can see it here in
this
picture of Tom Venuto.
What Kind of Equipment Do I
Need?
The author expects you to have
access to a commercial gym or very well equipped home
gym. You will be working primarily with free weights (dumbells
and barbells), so a bench is a must. He does not spend
any time explaining exercise or the mechanics of a
particular exercise movement; just gives you the names.
So, unless you are already very familiar with
bodybuilding exercises like "stiff legged deadlift,"
"barbell rows" and "military bb press, you would be well
advised to invest in a good exercise manual as well.
Something like
The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding would be
ideal. A
kitchen scale
for the diet portion is also recommended.
How Many Days Do I Need to Work
Out?
Burn The Fat Feed the Muscle
recommends that beginners do a weight workout three
times per week (full body routine) on non-consecutive
days. Intermediate level are advised to do three
or four workouts per week on a two day split routine
(half the body one day, half the body the next day; each
muscle group worked no more than twice per week.)
Advanced level can expect to do weights four or five
days per week on this program, using a three or four day
split routine (each muscle group worked once every five
to seven days.)
In addition to the weight
workouts, Burn the Fat Feed the muscle recommends that
everyone do at least three days per week of cardio for
20 to 30 minutes at a time if your body fat levels are
already at a desirable level. If you want to lose
fat, Venuto asks you to add a fifth or even seventh day
of cardio to maximize your results.
The Program
This is a good program, in that it
you will lose weight if you follow it, and without
wrecking your health in the process. Like all successful
programs, it works because it combines a sound
nutritional advice with vigorous exercise.
What I liked most about Burn The Fat is
that its one of the most complete books on modern
nutritional techniques for attaining the fitness model
look. Once you read this, you can talk intelligently and
at length with any other fitness enthusiast about
manipulating metabolic rates, determining body
composition, and macronutrient ratios. What this program
does best is explain the big picture of what needs to be
done and how. It has the best section, by far, on goal
setting, how to chart your progress and learning to
create meal plans (can be difficult for some people.)
Where I think Burn the Fat Feed
the Muscle is weak is in explaining the mechanics of the
individual exercises that it recommends. For someone who
has zero exercise experience, this book alone is not
going to be enough. But, if you are already comfortable
with basic weight training exercises, have access to a
trainer or friend at a gym that explain proper form to
you, or can get your hands on bodybuilding manual from
the library or
amazon.com you will be all set.
Fat Loss Ability:

Burn
The Fat Feed The Muscle is one of the good guys. It too
is a solid program. It's based on healthy nutritional
guidelines and classic exercises that have built some of
the most famous physiques in the natural bodybuilding
arena. You will lose fat on this program, but you must
adhere to the nutritional advice on not only on a
temporary basis, but as a lifestyle.

Ease
of Use:

While I found it easier to
use than The Truth About Six Pack Abs, I think that
exercise instructions are a little light, especially for
beginners. Complete weightlifting newbies will need a
classic bodybuilding manual to better understand the
terminology and weightlifting strategies he suggests.
Beginners with previous
weightlifting experience will do well with this book. If
you already know good weightlifting form on the classic
lifts and understand terms "double progression," "split
body routines," and "concentric and eccentric movement,"
but have not achieved your fitness goals then this book
may be the missing link for you (especially if your
nutrition has been lax.)
